"He looks great! (for a thoroughbred)"

This was the general summary comment Montana got from our vet yesterday at the annual spring inoculations and wellness check. Our vet does not like thoroughbreds. She has been our vet since I got Montana 8 years ago and on every visit she has managed to use this phrase, "...for a thoroughbred".

"Nice horse!.....for a thoroughbred."

"Good muscling!....for a thoroughbred."

"Nice manners!....for a thoroughbred."

I now wait for that other muckboot to drop, so to speak, whenever she says something good about him.

Yesterday my friend Kathy and I got in early on the spring vetting and thereby avoided the Circus Maximus which is the general barn vet visit for all comers. This mess takes all day and is quite aggravating as you cannot know when you will be 'called' and have to wait around in a queue that is always reforming.

So yesterday was quite civilized: Montana, John, Winston, and Cody like clockwork; and Kathy and I split the farm call fee. Saving a little money and a lot of time.

Whether it's due to his track experiences during the racing days, his natural temperament, or my superb training skills hahahaha, Montana is extremely well-behaved for vetting. Shots, pokings and proddings, blood drawn for Coggins, he stands like a soft-eyed statue. So Vet usually has to say something nice eventually, and then take it back with her signature qualification.

During John's time, Montana had to wait in the round pen so I could give him his supplements and turn him out again. He became 'happy' in the round pen, first having several energetic rollabouts, and then prancing, then rearing, bucking, and rooting vigorously in the snow for tidbits. I tried so hard to get a picture of him rearing because it was beautiful to see. But I just missed it every time.

Here he is on a prance-about:

And coming to see if I am ready to turn him out yet:

You can see that "I'm so full of myself" expression that says Happy Horse to me.

And here's poor John suffering the humiliation of wearing someone else's monogrammed halter; his winter coat is starting to shed out:

Yup, I used to get that same thing with my Appy gelding in TB country. Bugged the crap out of me. Now, doing what we do, I make sure to put folks (kinda nicely even) in their place when they start trash talking TBs, Appys, etc.

A good horse is a good horse is a good horse. Period. It does not matter size, color, breed, or sex. As long as that horse is loved by YOU, the OWNER, and behaves like a Good Horse, then who cares? ;) Good boy Montana!! And of course, good man John too! (And ya know, they BOTH look fantastic!!)

That first picture is stunning ... for a sorrel! :P

Do you bother to shed your horses out (like with a shedding blade or stone, or just let it fall out on its own?

LOLOLOLOL!!! Lily, that comment!!! LOLOLOLOL!!

TB Hoof Porn! New phrase!! hehehehe... I love it! You had both me and Dear Husband giggling like crazy over that one. Way to go!! (And truth be told, I really needed a giggle today!! Thank you for providing the comic relief!)

Now be SURE to kiss that stunning studly TB of yours from me, and a special on to Master John too! (I thought of him while peeking at Sonny Bunz today. Sonny was laying down in the sunshine, quasi napping, but being sure to eat his hay while he was down there...hehe)

Mrs. Mom: Come to think of it, Appys have this whole prejudice thing going even more than TB's don't they? You said it about a good horse is a. I'll smooch on them both today and also take a closer look at their feet thanks to you!

Funder: That was hilarious! I have a shedding blade and a shedding 'flower', a plastic thing with scallops and teeth that pulls fine undercoat well. I will have 'sacrifice' days when I just resign myself to getting covered with stickly horse hair, and work on it for a half hour at a time. Otherwise John actually gets fur mats like a dog or cat!

I hear it about our paint too :) I think it's anything the person doesn't have. My trainer (and his trainer girlfriend) both said colored horses are ALL crazy (they are into the plain ol bay and sorrel quarter horses). I always just laughed about it because I KNOW my horse was crazy. lol

Hee-hee! I am sitting here right now in my 'horseypants' covered with my horse's hair. Never wear polar fleece to the barn.

By the way, there's an award for you at my blog. Stop by and check it out!

You know he does look pretty good - for a thoroughbred. As a matter of fact he is gorgeous. Love those back handed compliments too. We got them all the time about our paint horse Lifeguard.
As long as you know you've got the best horses that's all that matters, and John and Montana are just great.
I hope ours start shedding soon, that means spring is just around the corner.

Yep, I've heard those kind of comments too...he's sure pretty, for an Appy!
I groomed My Boy today and half of the hair stuck to my fleece. Note to self- no more fleecies while grooming! :)

He looks lovely - period. :) Funny the stereotypes that stay in place in someone's mind, isn't it? I don't think we're quite at shedding season here - soon I hope though...

Um people know what appendix horses are right? LOL Talk about discrimination! he he. My mare has alot of TB in her. I love her. Your horses are beautiful, for not being mine. lol

I think I would call her out on that...irks me when people comment to me about a quarter horse not being able to do dressage. Johnny is so cute...love that horse.

Uggghhh-looks like everyone has had to deal with those backhanded compliments. Why do people do that? Oh yea, cause they just can't stand to give up their prejudices.

Oh well, you know you have great horses, so what she says doesn't make any difference.

Looking forward to hearing about your training time and shows this summer. :)
