Pony Tails

Lytha of Horse-Crazy American in Germany has inspired me to try to keep John's tail cleaner because she likes Baasha's tail to be snow-white. Well John won't make that standard, partly because his tail does have some black hair in it. But yesterday I gave him the Pony Tail treatment with a shampoo, cream rinse, and Show Sheen detangling. This took about one hour and he practically fell asleep during the process.

We then went for a 2 hour trail ride to dry it and show off to the birds, flies, and guinea hen gang that had mobbed the yard by the time of our return:

I don't think I've ever been this close to guinea fowl before. Let me tell you they make some strange noises. It's like a whole shelf's worth of Random Avian Sound Effects got bestowed upon them at the creation, in return for their awkward pin head appearance.

This is apparently a gang of Guinea thugs who wander the farmscape looking for trouble or bugs; they were running down the road practicing their sound effects as I left.

And I made this little movie of John in his new paddock, so that you could see his body condition. In return for being boring, it is very short:

His belly has lost that aggravated puffy look; behind the ribs where he used to have a bulge, he now is concave. His coat is shiny and bright, and his eye is cheerful again like when I first bought him. This is from 3 weeks at the new barn, and different hay, different feeding schedule, and also just spring finally arriving.

Have a great weekend everyone!!

John is better then my Gen about the Guinea Hens! My horse will kick and kill the buggers if they get too close.

No the video isn't boring - how could it be - he's so beautiful - it's amazing what proper feeding can do! And that tail - I have one grey horse and her tail doesn't look remotely like that as she hasn't had her first bath yet this year!

OMG, how did you get his tail so white? Every time I scrub Dixie's tail it gets whiter but I don't know if I'll ever get snow white like that. I am thinking halfway seriously about dyeing it black!

He looks great, by the way. Happy horse!

I'm wondering what the male Guinea Hens are called.

John's tail is just lovely and his overall apparence is great. Such a handsome horse.

more tail pics! hehehehe

hey, can you get video of those guinea hens so we can hear them? i'm totally curious and you're not the only person who's commented on their noises.

i want some cuz they eat ticks, and we have a lot of ticks in germany, and also in my own yard, and pasture. but then i heard how loud the guinea hens are, hm.

john's tail looks whiter than baasha's and it's certainly thicker! woo, i'm impressed.

show sheen is on our list of "things to buy in america this summer" cuz it's an exorbitantly expensive import here. i sure miss it (and laser sheen, the concentrate so i can make lots).

That is one awesome looking tail. Interesting how just 3 weeks at a new barn can make such a difference.

I LOVE my guinea hens (proper name guinea fowl!!!) I think my hen is sitting on a nest somewhere because she doesn't hang around the barn much... I need to find that nest and move them inside if that is the case... wouldn't want the youngens' to get "et"..... one thing, guineas are not only good against ticks, but they are certainly wonderful in spook proofing a horse... my guys hardly notice any type of bird now.....

OnTheBit: The guineas wandered through all the paddocks and in one, they were suddenly at extreme risk as a gelding just took after them. they ran through all their repertoire of noises and booked out of there.

Kate: thank you so much! I know your grey girl will be beeyotiful after her bath. I love the fragrance of various equine shampoos, which last 2-4 minutes at least. :)

Funder: It was a sample bottle of Equyss Horse shampoo I got at an expo. I will look at the specific type; it sudsed up really well and rinsed out nicely, and without much scrubbing his tail got clean - it was very yellow and brown before.

Molly: Guinea fowl, Sue says (further down). Thanks! His mood is sweet too. I think he was eating out of nervous aggravation at the old place, and with poor hay he was never satisfied.

Lytha: I will try to get a movie of the guinea folk if/when they return. The sounds were - quite loud and would wake you from a sound sleep for example. Maybe they quieten down when they are on home turf, I believe these were visitors. Isn't there a German version of ShowSheen? how do Lipizzans get those white tails? Well they probably import ShowSheen no matter the cost...

NM: Yes, I am surprised too. I thought it would be 3-5 months before I'd see a real difference. The best thing is his mood - energetic and lovey dovey both.

Sue: Are your guineas noisy? these ones would wake the dead!! Cute little puffballs though.

Allhorsestuff: He can splash and sploosh for the longest time. When we are out on trail and I want him to take a drink all this playing around is exasperating! But I guess if he was thirsty he would drink...:)

Wow! John's tail is practically glowing. Very pretty. He looks great.

OnceUpon: Thank you! It helped that the sun came out just when I went to take pictures. :)

White tails are amazing... when they are white. There is a lot to be said for black tails for those who have lazy humans.

That tail is absolutely gorgeous. My mare's tail is dark at the top, but then kind of looks frosted at the bottom with lots of lighter color, just at the bottom. It always looks dingy. Johns tail looks awesome!! Sounds like this barn is doing wonders for his happyness AND health.
