'You Do the Math', says John

Solve for x, where x = total quantity of wormer that got into John's mouth

and

P = full dose of Pyrantel pamoate,

L = amount John spread on his Lips, face, and halter,

J = amount John added to my Jacket sleeve,

and

S = amount John managed to Spit out immediately.

x = (P-L-J-S) or
x = bupkus

I can just hear the little worms of northern Minnesota cheering.

For some reason this 'pleasant apple flavor' does not appeal to him and that's putting it mildly. Just look into his eye.

We did have a nice ride prior to this little mathematical exercise in subtraction. We broke snowcrust out to a path the snowmobiles had made.

This was very very hard going for him and he was in a sweat by the time we turned back. So we worked on the outdoor track for awhile to round out the session.

Anybody have tips for getting the wormer into, rather than onto, the horse??

Hahaha, Solo is very good at subtraction as well. My tricks: make sure mouth is empty (no hay wads!) and shove your whole syringe and hand and fist all the way in their mouth so your knuckles are on their molars. That way, you shoot the goop way over the back of their tongue so they can't spit it out. And no, there is no conceivable way of doing this in a graceful and ladylike manner, LOL!

Just like eventer 79 says. Only it doesn't always work! And I don't put my fist that far in, just the syringe. I'd say I'm 75/25 now. Getting better all the time. I shoot it in there and then give lots of treats. I can't imagine it tastes good at all. I know it doesn't. I tasted it. Well, in truth, I rotate and tasted one of the four I use. Not so good at all. Gingersnap bribes are quite helpful.... :)If you get desperate, just make cookies sandwiches with the wormer in the middle like a nice white cream! ha ha!

Jacksonsgrrl: Cookie sandwiches sound like an excellent idea! You tasted it??!!

Hilarious post. Love your sense of humor. Most of us have been worming for years, yet we always have those days where nothing can keep the wormer off the ground. A determined horse is a determined horse.

Addendum: my method may be ineffective on a horse who has no qualms at separating your hand from your wrist, LOL! Sandwiches do not work for my horse and he refuses to take anything in his mouth post worming for at least 20 minutes while he quietly sulks.

Spam spam and more spam. Anybody else dealing with this? I hate to put a word ID on because those are hard for me when I am blogging without spectacles...but!

Hee hee, cute post. My Boy doesn't buy that whole apple flavoring concept, either. This reminds me I need to pellet worm him this weekend. Next in the rotation- paste. Which is always a nightmare. Ah well, I'm lucky I have my sister and her OH to help me muscle it into him. I'm lucky they don't have to be wormed every week, I'd be up a creek! :)

One more thing, I haven't dealt with too much spam, I notice it on really old posts at times, that have high comments? Weird they target those. I do word verification though, so maybe it does help?

Strongid 2CX daily dewormer top dressed on their mash....works every time.

My horses don't mind the paste. I can even deworm my draft mare halterless.

Over here they are starting to trick us by making so called treats that are really wormers. They do taste nice though. I still think it's a bit sneaky but humans are like that.

Don't stop posting such stories. I love to read stories like that. Just add more pics :)

Well, The only way I know is a clear mouth and the head held up high for some time after...it seems to help the horse retain more "S" and "J" amounts!
He is tall though...so hummm....

It is certainly interesting for me to read that article. Thanks for it. I like such topics and everything connected to them. I would like to read a bit more on that blog soon.

Odd comments. Very odd indeed.

I see an Excel Spreadsheet in the works where the formula will be as you stated, and the total outcome will be what outcomes in two days.

Bate and switch still works on Bella. Carrot becomes syringe becomes carrot again. Then her eyes are filled with hate for the next 30 minutes while she gags through a swallow.

What came to my mind was "This is your horse. This is your horse on wormer." Funny picture. My mare reacts the same way as John. But my Fjord will eat anything and seems to like the paste. We just did our last paste worming a week ago and will start testing for parasites (and treating accordingly) instead of rotational worming. I'm anxious to see what our first test will show in a couple of months.
