Chasing Daylight

The days are 'drawing in' as my mom used to say; slower to come in the morning, and night chases day into dusk a little earlier every day. I talked with some students last weekend about this time of year, and one young woman said, "It's beautiful, but why is it so sad?"

I'm not sure. Persephone has returned to the Underworld and winter will surely come. On a more mundane note, utility bills be higher than ever. And our afternoon ride is a mad dash for the last shreds of daylight.

Yesterday we encountered this strangely grumpy photographer dude who just stood and stared at us belligerently while I tried to get the above picture of the creek running high with rain.

He looked like Father Time himself, all grey and wrinkly and with an attitude.

Hope your autumn rides are going well and Father Time isn't chasing you too hard these days!

Nice photos. Maybe he was jealous that you get the perspective from atop a horse!

The path you're on looks very inviting for a ride. Old Mr. Grumpy should have taken a picture of you and your boy, it might have put a smile on his face. I love autumn but I guess people get a little underwhelmed by realizing that it leads to winter and shorter colder days ahead.

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, if not mellow photographers. We're just starting to see the leaves turning here, and as the days get shorter the deer are getting bolder about wandering out onto the roads. The bats still squeak and gibber in the evenings as they clear up the last of the summer mosquitoes; when they fold themselves away for the season, I will feel bereft.

Callie: Interesting idea! Jealous or nervous, he was a grump.

GreyHorse: I love this bridle path. And autumn too, with its beauty and ending note. But I do like our crazy winters too so it isn't all gloomy foreboding...

3PennyJane: Your quotes are so ravishing. I love bats. They seem like visitors from another dimension, yet they are so helpful to us (eatin skeeters all night long). An important philosophy article by Thomas Nagel is entitled, "What is it Like to Be a Bat?" and explores sonar perception of the world. Very trippy and profound also.

I love the photo of the stream through your horses ears! I sometimes miss the change of seasons, we don't get too much here is southern california. I love the smell in the air of autumn.

5:00 Somewhere: I love your name! Ain't it the truth. I lived in San Diego for 5 years and while we had a misty season we didn't have true fall/winter. I remember swimming in the ocean on Christmas Day though! Kind of compensated...Yesterday it was chilly enough for people to have wood fires, heartwarming fragrance.

I love trail riding. Blu the bucker was supposed to be my LD endurance trail hore. BUt her crazy antics, have made me opt for a gelding trail buddy. You Palimoni is gorgeous, I have a soft spot for those.
Thanks for visiting my blog !

Jocelyn, that buck would intimidate me. Hope the issue works itself out.
