I am going to be so dangerous with this thing. It's a Canon SD1100 IS, smaller than a pack of cigarettes and does nice little movies, has panorama stitch, and can cook breakfast for you if you learn to do all the adjustments & read the manual forwards and backwards twice.

My former camera was a Kodak EasyShare Z730, very basic, but I loved it - my only complaint was that so many action shots were blurred. So far I have managed to produce some nice blurs with this new one too! But I am hopeful that "image stabilization" and such will come to my aid soon.

I really want a new camera. I like mine well enough, but, I want to do some more technical photography (as intimidating as that is.) Then again, if I get a new camera, I'd have to get Photoshop. And I can really not afford either. Sigh.
Excellent! I took both my old camera and my son's new one to a horse show this weekend, and found that neither could handle action shots in an indoor arena. Once we went outside and took pictures of horses cantering in the warm-up arena, we got some decent pictures. Have fun with it.
New cameras are always fun. One of my cats is a pro at having her picture taken, very used to it and accepting. All of her pictures (or just about) are alert and pretty (for a cat). My other cat is always squinting in pictures of her...sigh...and she's black, which makes it even harder to take her picture!!! Can't wait to see the pictures you take with the new camera!
Thank you friends! I almost made the "big leap" to true big-girl camera (lenses, manual bazillion settings) and I'm thinking that's what you all use. Jester, you are getting a Nikon D50 right? Big leagues. I was afraid. And PonyGirl, sounds like you are on the brink of the move to the big leagues too. NM, you are already there correct? I need to do some digital growing up first...

When Chris got Megan the digital camera that we use-it was like coming out of the dark ages. It was amazing to us the things it could do.
Now we are contemplating upgrading-Megan is really into photography and loves the action shots, which her little digital can't handle a lot of.
But I don't think we would have even thought about making that leap without starting with a smaller version. So enjoy your new camera and when you get to the point when you realize it has maxed out in potential-then jumping to something bigger, better, faster, more power. ..rahhh, rahhh(as Tim The Toolman used to say) won't seem so intimidating-LOL.
Actually, I have a Nikon D50 and I'm getting a Nikon D300. My dad fell in love with my D50 and pushed me to get the D300 so that he could have my D50. I can't recommend the D50 enough though, if you want a DSLR I would take the Nikon D50 over the D40 any day, plus you should be able to get a pretty nice deal since the D50 is discontinued.
