Johnnie Comes Marching Home!

John does come when I call him, on most days, and he especially marches on these cold days when he is bored and hungry. Montana will look up at me, and occasionally take one step in my direction, but then he just stands and watches me walk over. In the video you can see our covered arena, the saving grace of winter in this awful climate.

I had a pretty decent ride on John yesterday. I'm working on taking a bit of contact with a new fatter bit I changed into his bridle last week. The world of gaited horses and their tack is a jungle of mysterious questions to me. so is the whole issue of how they are supposed to be 'in the bridle'. I see every which thing but I am going to leave that for another post.

Meanwhile, here's John's opinion of my picture-taking when he wants his mint:

Johnnie is one of the most beautiful horses I've ever seen with a personality to match. I love that he comes to you when you call. Glad you managed to get a ride in with this frigid weather. Wish we had an indoor, it would be so nice in these temps.

Too cute! He practically ran to you! Wish my horse would do that...he usually goes the other way, lol! Does he have borium on his shoes? Just wondering from the crunching sound of his hooves on the snow.

John is a handsome man for sure! Love his opinions there ;)

Gaited horses... I always rode them in the snaffle, in the saddle that allowed them to move the best. The selection of tack is bewildering to me, and a lot of it seems like someone is just trying to sell me something that we don't need. Guess that could be said about a lot of horse stuff though, huh?

Oh I LOVE horses that come when called... all four of mine will do it... course, sometimes, a bit too fast... and when you have an 1800 lbs draft bearing down on you... scary!!!!! but it sure is handy when you need them for work or whatever!!!! I taught them with treats, now they just assume it's treat time (and sometimes it is)... Johnnie sure is a beauty.. just the horse my hubby would like to have....

GreyHorse: Thank you so much - his personality can be on the !! side some days but is always a hoot.

PonyGirl: Montana used to slowly mosey away from me when I first got him - and the mosey would turn to a faster & faster walk if I pursued - but somehow he felt it was forbidden to run; it was funny to watch but not so funny to deal with. John is barefoot and it was hellish cold so that's why the snow was so squeaky.

MrsMom: I have been the route of the ripoff 'gaited horse' saddle and never again; now I am confused about contact and may consult your wisdom down the road about this when I get my bit post sorted out.

Sue: The idea of an 1800 pounder skipping up to one in the pasture is a bit unnerving! For Montana, no treat has ever proven desirable enough for him to make the grand concession.

Ok, my younger son, age 4, saw the video while I was online this weekend and he about died laughing. He ran to get my older son, age 7, because he just HAD to see this funny horse running the camera over. I swear, they made me replay it like 5 times!! lol They liked his tongue too, they think he's a pretty funny horse.

EzraPandora, clearly your sons have excellent taste. :) He did practically run me over and the tongue is out far too often; his motto is "taste the world and find it good".
